Trying out nautical gadgets

A child in a toy store ...

This is how all sailors feel when they enter a nautical accessories store, or an nautical online store. The urge to buy all kinds of nautical gadgets is very strong.

However, you can't have everything, although there are some nautical accessories that every sailor and sea lover should have. Do you want to know what they are?

Number 1

In the first position we find a quick hook for the defenses. Purists will surely move their nose, no doubt a hook does not have the same taste in the seafaring art of a whale, but we would like to encourage more the vision of a boat where even first-time sailors are more oriented to bathing than to 'being a sailor'. Seen in this way it can be very useful to enjoy your day on a boat without having to experience the feeling of being back at school ...

This object is called Fast Fender and its operation is very simple. Just hook it on the railings, turn it 90° and you're done. The one we tested has a rope of up to 8 mm in diameter that is inserted and blocked by a special fixing system that allows you to easily adjust the height of our fender. The object is available for both sailboats and motor boats.

Number 2

Secondly we have the Plastimo horseshoe lifeguard. It is yellow, and we like it that way, although it is also available in white and orange. The housing is replaceable.

The horseshoe, although not approved in countries like Italy, is preferable to the traditional doughnut. Its shape makes it the ideal tool for the recovery of a man overboard.

It has a buoyancy of no less than 147 N and its shape and texture are designed to support the back without causing injury during lifting. Try to imagine using a halyard or a rope to lift the victim in rough seas and you can understand why this object is shaped like this.

Another important feature is the ability to enter it very easily, in all weather conditions. The great ease of launching completes the profile of this tool that for us is indispensable.

If you don't believe it, try to imagine your back in a rigid threaded lifejacket, the homologated type, while you come lifted to return to the boat ...

Number 3

Our gaze is directed at the slightly reddish patina that ruins our steel on board. We've already tried a lot of products with few results, both for cleaning and for our wallets.

Among the things we've tried are this light green ointment. On the label we read "Radiant, acid-free marine detergent. Effective on steel and washable surfaces". Yes, effective, so everyone says ...

Armed with skepticism, a sponge and a damp cloth we attack the "baby stay" tensor, which like our boat, is thirty years old and has visible rust. Aware of how the previous attempts with other products turned out, we took off our shirt to face a task of enormous proportions, but to our surprise (and pleasure), after very few passes, the rust disappears.

We quickly change hands, as in a modern version of "waxing, polishing" and take the wet cloth to remove any traces of emulsion. Just as the Karate Kid enthusiastically discovered that he had learned the karate moves, we were thrilled when the tensor shone before our eyes, returning to its gleaming appearance.

Number 4

Who hasn't felt the frustration of not knowing where to permanently attach something on board?  An Ipad used as a plotter, a GPS, a buoy or even a small solar panel...

In our last navigation we tried the Plasticlip from Plastimo, the stainless steel clamps and the quick hooks from FNI and we tried to position them for different uses. Definitely a must.

Immediately we realized that it would not be necessary to have the help of experienced craftsmen in the manufacture of supports and braces, these terminals make us capable of fixing our accessories anywhere, a great saving in time and money.

They are used in a very simple way, for the Plasticlip of Plastimo you take the accessory, fix it with a screw to the base plate or directly to the Plasticlip and then shake the two ends of the Plasticlip around the pulpit or on the anti-tip bar with the screws provided.

In the case of the stainless steel clamp of one of the two jaws, it is already screwed in and designed to receive the screws that will allow us to fix the accessory.

In both cases, the seal is very solid and we will only have to power our gadget (if it is electric) and enjoy the navigation.

The quick hook in nylon, which is used in our case for the boat (but it is also valid to keep the ropes in order), we cross it with the Plasticlip and we obtain a comfortable position for the legendary boat that has a well-known passion for the immersions in the sea ,and in spite of its size, it always tends to get lost by the boat.

Number 5

Fifthly, we found an accessory that you will really love (and hate, nobody likes to clean). It is a composition of handle and brush DECKMATE. We've already been through at least two broken handles, we've tried telescopic handles, fixed, expensive and cheap, but despite the price there was no way they wouldn't bend while cleaning our beloved teak deck.

In the test we did it in a heavy way, a test is a test, but we could not, in normal conditions, to bend the handle .

The soft brush effectively cleaned our teak, DECKMATE is already known for the quality of its bristles, and we have confirmed it.
