Learning and getting a degree in architecture is one of the best experiences a student can have. Even if you later decide not to pursue a career in architecture in the working world, the architecture school experience is very beneficial and rewarding for everyone who attends, as it provides highly enriching and rewarding knowledge and skills that will always be there.
Here are 10 reasons why you should study architecture
1. To become a brilliant problem solver
The school of architecture teaches you how to take a pile of data and information and interpret it, in order to know how to design a building or solve a problem.
The answers never come immediately, they come through researching the problem and many trial and error versions until a perfect solution is reached. This is called the design process.
The same design process and logic used to design a building can be used to solve many problems that have nothing to do with architecture.
Once you learn and discover what your design process is, it will change the way you approach problems in all areas of life.
2. To travel around the world
Everyone who studies architecture must travel to explore how people live in other parts of the world.
I will even argue that people do not even know what architecture is, until they have come out of their bubble and visited buildings on the other side of the world to see how other people live and interact with their surroundings.
Travel is a requirement for all students of architecture.
3. Because you love to do things.
In architecture school you are constantly doing and producing things.
Sketches, drawings, models, renderings, 3D computer drawings, paintings, collages, photographs, portfolios, resumes, good ideas, the list is endless. From the first day you walk in until you hand in your architectural FBP (in spanish: PFC de arquitectura), you can be sure you won't be bored for a second.
Architecture school allows you to use that passion to create. Students are often so focused on the process of making that they lose track of time and the rest of the world. Staying up all night with intensity and concentration is something that many architects miss from their student life.
4. To make great friends and meet some INCREDIBLE people.
The people you go to architecture school with quickly become your family, because they are all in this together. You will spend more time with them than with anyone else in your life. Some of the most important people in my life are the people I went to architectural school with.
You will see how after you finish you will want to keep in touch, attending meetings, conferences and talks of all kinds. Architecture will become your passion, even when that is not your main job. All architecture students should attend conferences to have the opportunity to meet a very diverse group of really great people.
5. To encourage lateral thinking.
The school of architecture tries to see problems from many different angles. It is not about going from point A to point B. It's about the journey students take to get to their destination.
In the school of architecture you will feel that the creativity that they tried to restrict you in the school, is rewarded and sponsored, so that you can use it freely to create and you will put all the knowledge that you are acquiring at the service of that creativity. Instead of being punished for not following a grid of instructions, you will be rewarded for your creative proposals.
6. Discover what you are capable of.
The amount of personal growth that occurs during the architecture school years is amazing. Students enter as newcomers totally intimidated by the work that thesis students are producing, and years later they are producing the same amount of work themselves.
Everyone is capable of so much more than they think they are. Architecture school is an incredible opportunity to test your limits of what you think is possible, plus there is always someone willing to help architecture FBP (in spanish: ayuda PFC de arquitectura) at a given time, you don't have to worry if we have really tried hard during all the years of study.
7. To become an architect.
If you want to be an architect, have your own design firm, print drawings and watch your buildings being built, then architecture school is the first step in the process.
Becoming an architect is a three-part process: proper education, hours of work experience, and registration as an architect.
8. To help you understand what you want to do with your life
Many people start the school of architecture and quickly realize that architecture is not for them, but they understand very well what they should do. Maybe your graphic design, engineering, computer programming, art or whatever.
The intensity of architectural school helps people to be very clear and discover what they should do with their lives, even if it's not architecture.
9. To have fun.
Architecture school is so much fun! Traveling around the world, meeting interesting architecture people, staying up all night, working very hard with your best friends and always testing the limits.
Some people never wanted architecture school to end because it was so much fun. Yes, it's possible that a lot of university students say that, but they don't build buildings...
10. Studying architecture will change your life.
It will change the way you see the world and ultimately change your life. You will graduate as a drastically different person than you were when you started. Except for friends of architecture, no one will really understand what you went through during your years in architectural school.
Architecture school is not easy and it is not supposed to be. The purpose of architectural school is to create strong, dynamic, intelligent, and well-trained architects who are ready to move on to the next phase of becoming confident professionals who build the cities and towns of tomorrow.
